We enjoyed another informative tour from Anna Swann and Abruzzissimo Magazine this weekend. There are so many villages to explore around Abruzzo and we love to join her tours for little slices of each place. See photos here.
We went to San Buono to meet Antonio, a 91-year-old brick artisan (fornaciaio), who has restored his family’s 18th-century pincera kiln, the last remaining in Abruzzo, where generations of artisans baked bricks and roof tiles. He showed us how they are made and told stories about the old days.
The Mayor of San Buono, Nicola Zerra, showed us his beautiful town and took us to the 14th-century church of San Lorenzo to see the opulent crypt and some of us climbed up the bell tower. We were shown a 17th century water fountain that is still in use today. Another special stop - the noble 18th-century Palazzo Amicarelli on the town’s main square. We were greeted by the owner who showed us around the palazzo and talked about its legends. He took us to the cellar, where he helps his neighbor make wine. We were able to taste some delicious wine!
We had a 3-hour lunch at a local agriturismo sampling San Buono’s hearty dishes.
